SYNOPSIS
Nowadays only a few families living in the traditional way remain in the Basque Country. One day, one of these families is forced to cut the biggest treasure they have in their lands, one enormous century beech.
The trunk of the tree will begin its way, a pilgrimage that will bring us to light, among the daily jobs of the family, different elements of the life and culture of the basque people, revealing finally the true meaning of the journey.

DIRECTOR BIO-FILMOGRAPHY
My name is José María González Sánchez. I was born on 20 November 1969 in a small village, called Oñati, located in the Basque Country, in the north of Spain. I went to Barcelona to study cinematographic direction in the Catalonia´s Cinematographic Studies Centre (CEEC). In that period I made two short films (both recorded on digital format). The first was “The shadow of my soul”, a short fiction film of 23 minutes long without dialogues and recorded in black and white. The second was “Sahara”, a short documentary film about the Saharan refugee fields.
“… When the birds were lost” is my third work and my first feature film. This film has been to premiere in Bilbao. It has participied in many festivals like San Sebastian international film festival, the national documentary film and video festival of Buenos Aires, the international etnographic festival of Rio de Janeiro or the Etnographic festival of Espiello (Spain) where it won de prize of the best documentary film.
